Tater Trots Riding School – Frequently Asked Questions
For First-Time Riders & Their Families
Where Little Riders Begin Big Adventures! 🐴✨
1. What should my child wear to their Tater Trots lesson?
Comfort is key! We recommend long pants (leggings or jeans) and closed-toe shoes with a small heel if available. Sneakers are fine for beginners. We provide safety-certified helmets — but riders are welcome to bring their own.
2. Do we need to bring any special equipment?
Nope! At Tater Trots, we provide everything your little equestrian needs: helmets, brushes, tack, and of course, our sweet and gentle horses. Just bring water, comfy clothes, and a big smile!
3. Is horseback riding safe for young children?
Yes! Safety is the heart of everything we do. Our ponies and horses are carefully selected for their calm, kid-friendly personalities. Lessons move at a pace that feels comfortable for each child, with hands-on support and constant supervision.
4. What will my child learn in their very first Tater Trots lesson?
First lessons focus on building comfort, confidence, and connection. Your rider will learn:
• How to meet and greet their horse
• Basic barn safety
• How to mount
• How to steer, stop, and start
Most riders enjoy a relaxed walk on-lead, and confident kiddos may try a gentle trot.
5. Will my child get to brush and help take care of the horse?
Absolutely! At Tater Trots, horsemanship is just as important as riding. Many lessons include brushing, tacking up, and learning how to care for our horses — it helps build confidence and connection.
6. What if my child feels nervous?
Totally normal! Building trust takes time, and we’re experts at helping little riders feel safe and supported. We never rush — every lesson is tailored to each child’s comfort level, with lots of encouragement and smiles.
7. How long does it take for kids to feel confident?
Every young rider grows at their own pace. Some feel confident after a few sessions; others take longer. Our goal is steady progress, strong foundations, and memorable, joyful experiences — not rushing.
8. Can parents watch?
Of course! We love having parents cheer on their kiddos. You’re welcome to watch from our viewing area while giving riders space to focus and build independence.
9. What happens if the weather is bad?
If conditions aren’t safe — rain, high winds, or extreme heat — we’ll reschedule. We prioritize safety for both horses and riders.
10. How do I know which lesson type to choose?
All new riders begin with a beginner session so we can get to know them and assess comfort level. From there, we’ll recommend the best lesson path, whether it’s short-and-sweet starter sessions or full horsemanship lessons.
